Kelly Ann Carney: “One of my teachers last year, James Roodhuysen at Reed Intermediate, served in Vietnam. He always told us stories about being afraid of dying, and how much Americans were hated here. There was a lot of tension.”

Kevin Carney: “My Uncle Kevin served in the military during the Korean War, but I don’t think he went overseas. He was worried a lot about going over, though.”

William Duffy: “I served in the military during the Vietnam era. I was in the Navy, worked with the submarines. They have reunions every year, but I’m never able to go. If Veterans’ Day ever fell on a Sunday, we’d talk about it at the Lutheran church I attended in Redding. The veterans would stand up and tell their stories.”

Dawn Karp: “My grandfather served during World War II. In fact, there is a picture of him with Shirley Temple, who was in Europe at the time entertaining the troops. I didn’t even know about it until I was going through old pictures one day!”
