BETHEL – A 3-0 win over Joel Barlow back on October 21 had given the hopes of a state tournament berth renewed life for the Lady Nighthawks and a 1-0 win over Masuk on October 25 further energized those hopes.

A 1-6-3 record- disappointing to say the least, more so because the offense just couldn’t find the back of the cage - was quickly elevated to a 3-6-3 record.

Even though coach Kathy Davey was still talking state tournament at that point, the two wins gave the ‘Hawks the confidence that it might actually happen again.

All that was left, all the ‘Hawks could do really, was beat Bethel and then tie Shepaug to squeak into the state tournament. Since Shepaug was undefeated and Bethel was 5-5-4 overall, it seemed like the most reasonable plan.

But the Lady Wildcats, unfortunately, put a stop to all those state tournament thoughts with a 2-0 win over the Lady Nighthawks last Wednesday. Kerry Kopec and Elizabeth Kopec scored the goals that sunk Newtown to a record of 3-7-3. Bethel outshot Newtown, 18-10, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 14-10.

Newtown goaltender Kari Levinson faced those 18 shots and made eight saves on the afternoon.

NOTE:_The SWC_final four found New Fairfield (#4) facing Pomperaug (#1) and New Milford (#3) facing Brookfield (#2) on_Wednesday. The league finals were held Thursday.
