Margaret Donohue, 11, of Sandy Hook finished 13th in the 100-meter dash at 18.96 … about four seconds behind winner Karolyn Collins. Donohue finished fifth in Section 5 … about three seconds behind Kristen Perkins of New Haven. In the 400-meter dash, Donohue finished second at 1:10.63 … just two seconds behind Katie Bobinski of Torrington.

Jillian Thompson, 12, of Newtown finished third in the one-mile run at 6:35.54 … only 26 seconds behind winner Olivia Botteron of Vernon

Mark Silverman, 31, of Sandy Hook finished second in the men’s 100-meter dash at 12:41 and then finished second in the men’s 200-meter dash at 25.24. He finished behind Matthew Deleo of East Haven in both events and by a grand total of 1.79 seconds.

Ashley Mele of Newtown, a member of the Charter Oak Skating Club, took home a Gold Medal in the preliminary girls free skate. Leigh Pressman, another Charter Oak member, finished fifth in the event.

A large # of newtown field hockey players participated in the field hockey portion of the Annual Nutmeg State Games which were held at Fairfield University. The Scrabblers, a team of Newtown players, took home a silver medal for placing second in the competition.  The Blue Barracudas, a team which included four Newtown players, earned a bronze medal in the tournament.

A number of Newtown athletes participated in the field hockey tournament, with most of them making up the Scrabblers and four playing with the Barracudas.

Emily Lockhart, Jackie Isabella, Lisa Isabella and Taylor Barry played with the Barracudas as Linda Magliocco, Courtney Gleason, Nicole Alberico, Hannah Tenenbaum,Christina Ercole, Alissa Gross, Corey Stokes, Stephanie Soder, Jackie Hornak, Kimberly Solheim, Lisa Alberico, Rita Magliocco, Katie Datin, Caitlin Smiley and Christina Sanchez played for the Scrabblers. The team was coached by Dani Brown.

The Nutmeg Games are an Olympic-style sports festival bringing together hundreds of amateur athletes from across to Connecticut to participate in dozens of different sports and activities.

The purpose of the Games is to promote and reinforce the Olympic spirit on competition that values sportsmanship, effort and achievement and to motivate personal development in physical fitness and health through attainable goals.
