20th Anniv. Exhibiton

For Scrapbag Quilters

WOODBURY — The Scrapbag Quilt Artists is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a month-long show at The Gallery of Woodbury Library. The exhibit will be on display during regular library hours through September 29.

An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday,  September 10, from 2 to 4 pm.

The group, formed in Newtown from a Newcomers Club, now includes members from Brookfield, Danbury, Easton, Oxford, Monroe, Newtown, Norwalk, Weston and Woodbury. Meeting weekly, members share inspiration, assist with technical challenges, and support each other creatively and in their personal lives.

Previous group shows have appeared at Booth Library in Newtown, Roxbury Library and Darien Library.

From their beginnings in traditional quiltmaking, the group reflects the changes in the textile arts over the past two decades. Improvements is equipment, fabric, thread, and the increasing inclusion of embellishment and other surface design techniques produce a modern art form that is definitely not your grandmother’s flower garden.

Several of the members have exhibited nationally, most are prizewinners in various venues, many are renowned teachers in the fiber arts, and one has gone on to open her own gallery in Brandon, Vt.

The Woodbury exhibit follows the path taken over the years, and is a reflection both of each artist’s creative vision as well as where art quilts stand today.

Regular September library hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday, 10 am to 9 pm. The library, which is at 269 Main Street  South (Route 6), can be reached by calling 203-263-3502.
