Money Found

Police report that they are holding a sum of money that was found at Hawley School on Church Hill Road on February 16.

Police advise that the owner of the money should contact the property officer at the police station at 3 Main Street.

Opener

Police said they are holding an electronic garage door opener, which was found in its original packaging on May 9. The owner of the device should contact the police property officer at the police station.

Toddy Hill Crash

Police report motorist Anthony C. Mason, 16, of 50 Deep Brook Road was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro southbound on Toddy Hill Road about 10:20 pm August 15 when he lost control of the vehicle, hit a mailbox and a stone wall and then became airborne, striking a utility pole.

Police said Mason received facial cuts, and a passenger, David Andras, 15, of Newtown, received unknown injuries in the collision. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both youths to Danbury Hospital for treatment, police said. Police said the crash is under investigation.

 

Tractor-Trailer

Police report a collision between a tractor-trailer truck and an auto at the intersection of Toddy Hill Road and Sugarloaf Road about 10 am August 14.

Police said motorist Jeffrey A. Tomchik, 26, of Middlebury was driving a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse northbound on Toddy Hill Road. As he approached Toddy Hill Road’s intersection with Sugarloaf Road, Tomchik saw the truck driven by Daniel W. Smith, 42, of Meriden, turning left from Sugarloaf Road onto southbound Toddy Hill Road, so he stopped, police said.

But as the truck turned, a left rear trailer tire struck the auto, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Smith a written warning stating he failed to grant the right of way from a stop sign.

Pole Bridge

Motorist Allison Pennucci, 19, of 7 Rose Lane, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1994 Geo Prizm eastbound on Route 34, stopped and was waiting to turn left onto Pole Bridge Road when the Prizm was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Albert Renda, 30, of Wallingford, who was driving a 1996 Ford pickup truck about 4 pm August 13, police said.

Pennucci complained of head pain, but refused ambulance transport, police said.

Police issued Renda a misdemeanor summons on charges of failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and failure to carry automotive insurance. He is scheduled to appear in court.

 

Point O’Rocks Crash

Motorist Timothy McCloud, 18, of 6 Purdy Station Road was driving a 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante westbound on Point O’ Rocks Road about 1 am August 16 when he lost control of the auto, went off the right side of the road, and struck a tree, police said.

Police said that McCloud was not injured by the impact. Police verbally warned McCloud for making a restricted turn.

Rocks On Road

State police said motorist Reid Hoffman Ferris, 42, of Bristol was driving a dump truck on westbound Interstate 84 between Exits 10 and 9 about 9:30 am August 15 and stones were dropping from the back of the truck, falling all over the highway.

Some of the stones hit the windshield of a 1999 Saab driven by Lisa Bartolini, 35, of Prospect, state police said. There were no injuries, according to state police.

 

DUI Charge

Police said that early on the morning of August 18 motorist James A. Eckler, 21, of Watertown drove into the Blue Colony Diner parking lot on Church Hill Road a very high speed, passing two parked police cars in the front parking lot and traveled into the rear parking lot of the diner.

Police said they had attempted to stop Eckler before he entered the rear lot. Eckler then almost drove into a police car, police said. Police noted there were several diner patrons in the parking lot.

Police said they stopped Eckler and smelled alcohol on his breath, after which they gave him field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Police said they transported Eckler to the police station where they charged him with driving under the influence and reckless driving. Police released Eckler from custody on a $100 bond for a September 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court where he will answer the charges before a judge.

Narcotics

Newtown police report they learned on August 18 that Adam Chernowsky, 24, of Shelton, on whom they held an arrest warrant on various charges, was at the Shelton police station.

Newtown police went to Shelton and took Chernowsky into custody, charging him with two counts of possession of narcotics, and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, and first-degree failure to appear in court.

Chernowsky posted a $500 cash bond and was released from police custody for an August 30 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

High Bridge Rollover

 Police said motorist Michael S. Perry, 19, of Stratford was driving a 1995 Honda Civic eastbound on High Bridge Road on August 19 when a deer ran into the road from the right road shoulder, resulting the Honda climbing an embankment and rolling over. Perry was not injured in the accident, police said.

DUI

Police said that motorist Scott Trapp, 33, of 3 Church Hill Road had become involved in a verbal dispute with another motorist as they were traveling northbound on South Main Street about 7 pm August 19.

Trapp and the other unidentified motorist pulled into the Citgo filling station at 151 South Main Street, after which police were called to the scene, according to police.

Police said they smelled alcohol on Trapp’s breath and gave him field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Police said they charged Trapp with driving under the influence and following too closely, after which they released him on a $50 cash bond September 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Castle Hill Crash

Police said that motorist Maria Zegarra, 41, of Danbury was driving a 1991 Pontiac Trans Sport minivan eastbound on Castle Hill Road about 7:40 am August 13, when she lost control on the wet road, causing her to cross the road’s center line and collide with westbound motorist Sandra Lesch, 45, of 35 South Main Street, who was driving a 1993 Subaru Legacy. There were no injuries. Police issued Zegarra a written warning.

 

Church Hill Road

Police report motorist Richard A. Dupont, 39, of Southbury was driving a 1992 Mazda MX-6 coupe westbound on Church Hill Road and approaching its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road about 9:15 pm August 15 when an unknown motorist, who was eastbound on Church Hill Road, turned left onto Walnut Tree Hill Road.

 Mr Dupont, who was driving the Mazda, braked and swerved to the right to avoid a collision, but the Mazda collided with the unknown vehicle, police said.

The driver of the unknown vehicle continued on without stopping, police said. There were no injuries.

Mt Pleasant Collision

Police said motorist Leah S. Adler, 24, of 33 Sugar Street was driving a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus westbound on Mt Pleasant Road and preparing to turn left onto Taunton Lake Road about 7:40 pm August 14, when the Chrysler was struck from behind by a westbound 1997 Hyundai Accent driven by Gwendolyn C. Casey, 17, of 5 Morgan Drive. The Hyundai carried four teenage passengers.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Adler to Danbury Hospital to be checked out for neck pain, police said. Ambulance staffers checked out all occupants of the Hyundai, but did not transport any of them, police said.

Police issued Casey an infraction ticket on a charge of following too closely.

Great Quarter

Police report motorist John A. Picarazzi, Jr, 16, of Monroe was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang westbound on Great Quarter Road about 11:15 pm August 15 when he lost control of the Ford, went off the westbound road shoulder, and hit a rock. Neither Picarazzi nor a passenger were injured, police said. Police took no enforcement action.

Truck Stolen

Police said they received a report August 21 that a red 1986 Ford F-150 pickup truck was stolen from Newtown Exxon at 75 South Main Street. The truck has Connecticut marker Plate 88220C. Police ask anyone with information about theft to contact them.

Mt Pleasant

Police said they received a report about 10 am August 20 that a female was sleeping in a motor vehicle parked at a Mt Pleasant Road business.

Police said they investigated and charged the female, Dana L. Murphy, 19, of 10-Washington Avenue with misuse of marker plates and failure to return a suspended driver’s license.

Police released Murphy for a September 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

 

South Main Crash

Police said motorist Michael Smith, 33, of 32 Washbrook Road was driving a 1995 Dodge Neon northbound on South Main Street behind a northbound vehicle driven by Diane Takahashi, 49, of 4 Cobblers Mill Road, about 9 am August 21.

Takahashi slowed down for traffic and was struck from behind by Smith, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Smith a written warning for following too closely.
