A Sweet Return To Childhood Memories

To the Editor:

We moved to Newtown in 2005. We love the community, the local business, and the wide variety of restaurants. The people are friendly, and the schools are great. Our newest favorite sweet gem is Dere Street Bakery. For me, it brings back fond memories of my childhood. Both my parents are from England, not far from where the owner of Dere Street is from. As a child, our holidays and celebrations were filled with wonderful English breads, tea cakes, pastries, savory pies for dinner, and of course, scones.

Sadly, all that ended when my mother passed away in 2014. I tried hard to fill my mom’s shoes with her recipes, especially her scones that we would enjoy on a Sunday morning with a cup of tea, but I made one too many epic failures. Apparently, her pinch of this and a handful of that didn’t work with me. I was thrilled when I walked into Dere Street Bakery and found so many items that my mom would make for us as children.

First, this little gem is adorable to look at and in a perfect location right in the heart of town by the flagpole. The people are friendly and helpful. You can feel the passion of what they make with every conversation we have, and who doesn’t love a great British accent? The Cottage Pie is amazing and great comfort food, the Steak and Ale is a number one hit with my family, but the scones…. better than what mom use to make; sorry mom. They have so many to choose from, both sweet and savory. They are all just so good.

If you haven’t stopped by to enjoy these wonderful treasures, you have to take a minute and go in on Saturday or Sunday and try some of their amazing treats; you will not be disappointed. I am thrilled that I can pass on some of my childhood favorites to my family.
