Ashlar Seeks Volunteers

New Year resolutions are an integral custom this time of year. And many individuals this year are turning to Ashlar of Newtown, a 156-bed skilled nursing facility to fulfill their resolutions for 2004.

“We usually see an increase in an interest in volunteering at this time of year and that’s a great thing,” said Hilda DeLucia, community resources manager at Ashlar of Newtown. “This year we are specifically interested in getting volunteers to work at our Commons Café and Gift Shop.”

This little nook, located in the commons area between the Skilled Nursing Home and the Assisted Living residence is a great place for residents to stop, shop and spend some free time. Volunteers love to work at the gift shop because they can develop relationships with the “regular” customers they see each week.

Jackie Cedor and Michele Imperioli, seniors at Newtown High School, have been volunteering at the gift shop since it opened four years ago. On the last Tuesday of every month Ashlar has a taste test of a baked item. Jackie and her mom have recently begun baking together in order to enter a baked good for the Gift Shop’s monthly “Bake-Off.”

Ashlar of Newtown has many other creative, and unique volunteer opportunities such as our beauty cart which allows volunteer to polish residents’ nails and treat them to some sweet smelling hand creams. Ashlar also is in need of some additional pets to visit the patients.

Anyone who is interested in starting the new year on a positive note should call Hilda DeLucia to find out about Ashlar’s volunteer opportunities. Hilda DeLucia can be reached at 364-3127.
