Daisy Troop Participates In Service Project

St Rose Daisy Troop 596 participated in a service project called the “Daisy Ethiopian Drive.” The girls collected new pencils and composition notebooks to be given to a kindergarten class in Ethiopia. The service project was coordinated by Daisy Leader Michelle DePinto who worked with Coordinator of Community Projects for AmeriCares Tara Whalen.

AmeriCares is a nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization headquartered in Stamford.

The St Rose troop opened the drive up to the entire St Rose School population as well as to fellow Newtown Girl Scout troops. Together they collected more than 2,000 pencils and 200-plus composition notebooks.

On Thursday, January 19, Ms Whalen attended the St Rose Daisy Troop meeting and talked with the girls about AmeriCares and the children in Ethiopia. She explained to them that children in school in Ethiopia are given only one pencil a year and that the children would be so grateful for the supplies. Ms Whalen presented each girl with a gold starfish pin symbolizing the message from a story she read to them that supported the idea that every little bit helps.

The Daisies presented Ms Whalen with the donations and then Ms Whalen presented each of the girls with their Considerate and Caring petal and their Service from the Heart patch.
