NHS Summer Theatre Begins Performances Of âBlood Brothersâ Next Week
By Larissa Lytwyn
The first production of Newtown High Schoolâs summer theatre program will be Blood Brothers, running July 24â26 in the high school auditorium. The production is a benefit performance presented by an ensemble of Newtown High School Drama Club alumni and counselors from the Summer Theatre Connections regional summer theatre program. Proceeds will benefit the Newtown High School Arts Foundation.
Set in Liverpool, England, Blood Brothers is the story of twin brothers separated at birth. While one is raised in affluence, the other is brought up a street urchin. One day, as young men, the two meet. With gentle reflection, Blood Brothers explores the ramifications of social status and the simultaneous joy and darkness of human existence through classic song and cutting dialogue. It includes adult subject matter and strong language.
Blood Brothers, book, music and lyrics written by William Russell, premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse in January 1983, later playing in Londonâs West End theatre district. On Broadway, the show ran 839 performances from 1993 to 1995.
Blood Brothers will be performed at Newtown High School July 31 and August 1 at 7:30pm, $10 general admission, $8 for students and seniors. Reserved seating tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. To order tickets by mail, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your choice of show and a check payable to NHS Summer Theatre to Sabrina Post, NHS, 12 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook, Ct 06482. Proceeds will benefit the Summer Theatre Connections program. For more information, contact Nanci DiPerrio at 426-4212. Tickets will also be sold at the door prior to each performance.
