Jumps From Balcony In Cellblock
About 2:30 pm on Wednesday, a 25-year-old male inmate in a two-level cellblock at Garner Correctional Institution on Nunnawauk Road climbed a flight of stairs in the cellblock and then jumped over a high railing on a balcony there, falling to a concrete floor below.
The seriously injured unidentified inmate was listed in critical condition Thursday morning in Danbury Hospital, said state Department of Correction (DOC) spokeswoman Stacy Smith.
The inmate fell approximately 15 feet from the top of the railing to the concrete floor below. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the injured man to the hospital.
Ms Smith said the DOC is investigating the incident.
The prison, which houses approximately 600 male inmates, specializes in holding prisoners with psychiatric disorders.
