Porcoâs Karate Members Attend World Event
Master Michael Porco, along with several students from Porcoâs Karate Academy, recently attended the World Tang Soo Do Associationâs World Championship held in Greensboro, N.C. More than 1,600 competitors vied for medals at the WTSDAâs 14th Championship event, held every two years. Representatives from 34 different countries from around the globe gathered for the tournament.
This yearâs championship had a somber tone and a very special meaning to all WTSDA members. On July 9, 2012, the association lost its founder, Grandmaster Jae C. Shin, to an extended illness.
With heavy hearts, the championship got underway on Friday, July 20, commencing with the Creativity and Black Belt division competitions. There were 12 Creativity teams competing for first, second, and third place trophies. The teams were judged on technical ability as well as artistic value. All teams had a great showing, with the gold going to Star Karate School from New Jersey. Immediately following Creativity, the Adult Black Belt divisions began. Championship Cup winners were graded in three categories: weapons, open-hand forms, and free-fighting.
Day two of the event began with the official opening ceremonies at 9 am, part of which were devoted to a tribute to the late Grandmaster Shin. Many of his senior masters spoke through tears about the relationship they had had with him over the years, and many made a vow to continue their loyalty to the organization to which Grandmaster Shin had dedicated his life.
At around 11 am, the Tiny Tiger and Little Dragon divisions, along with the Special Needs division, got underway, followed by all of the Colored Belt divisions. The competition finished around 4:30 pm. At 7, a Mastersâ Dinner was held in honor of the Masters who have served in the association for more than 30 years.
Sunday, July 22, marked the grand opening of the new WTSDA World Headquarters in Burlington, N.C. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a memorial service for Grandmaster Shin was held there with thousands of students and their families attending.
