PHILLIPS COLLECTION LECTURE SEPT. 6

AVV 8-9 #708834

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Phillips Collection will present a lecture, “Let the Rest of the World Go By: Songs from the Time of the American Impressionists,” on Thursday, September 6, at 6:30 pm.

As America’s Impressionists were rediscovering the countryside, vast numbers of its residents were relocating to the newly industrialized cities. Author and Peabody Award-winning broadcaster Michael Lasser examines these Americans’ reactions to their new surroundings through the popular songs of the day, which are woven with tales of the city and dreams of returning to rural life.

Prior to the lecture, Lasser will sign copies of his book, America’s Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley, in the museum shop.

The Phillips Collection is at 1600 21st Street NW. For information, 202-387-2151 or www.phillipscollection.org.
