Portable Swimming Pools Must Meet State Building Code
Portable Swimming Pools Must Meet State Building Code
Residents planning on using a portable pool in their backyard this summer should be aware of state building codes that dictate the legal installation and/or the required permitting process for such pools, says Leonard C. Boyle, the State Commission of Public Safety.
These portable pools, which have become popular over the last several years due to convenience and price, may also pose a possible safety risk. In some cases, neither the pool manufacturer nor the retail store selling the pool advise consumers of local building codes and regulations.
A pool capable of holding more than 24 inches of water requires a permit and code-compliant barrier around the pool. Since the characteristics of a pool barrier differ greatly from the average back yard fence, consumers should consult with the local building regulations prior to the purchase or installation of a pool.
The State Department & Public Safety is issuing a reminder of these regulations, which were put into place in the interest of safety.
