U13 Boys Battle In Ice Breaker Tournament

Newtown’s U13 Blue boys’ lacrosse team hit the turf full steam ahead with a strong showing at the competitive Ice Breaker Tournament in Brookfield this past weekend. With only a few practices under their belts, the boys played five games against tough, seasoned, and rather large teams, and quickly gelled into a formidable force to be reckoned with. Game highlights are as follows:

Newtown 5, New Fairfield 0: Newtown maintained control of the ball all game, with David Anderson, Evan Eggleston, Nick Lansing, Adam Weber, and Max Weber all finding the back of the net, thanks to great play by Colin McCafferty and Kenny Barber. The defense was led by Cayden Dunn and Cyril Brown, with great play by Noah LaFerriere.

Newtown 3, Danbury 2: Impressive play by Kenny Barber, Nick Lansing, Riley Rising, and Colin McCafferty allowed David Anderson, Evan Eggleston and Oliver Wood to put Newtown up by three. Austin LeBlanc was fierce in goal with four saves on rapid-fire shots, and Sean Wallace was rock-solid on the D. Matthew Bucci, at times took on four players at once, while fellow middies spent time in the box after technical difficulties.

Somers 4, Newtown 3: Nick Lansing scored twice, and Oliver Wood had a goal in a tumultuous 24 minutes on the turf. Sean McCarthy, Ethan Hoffman, and Elliot Gregory rallied the offense, and the big Somers squad was limited by LeBlanc’s creative moves in goal. Good defensive play by Sean Wallace was key to stopping Somers when a mid-game goal switch became necessary. Goalie sub David Anderson also proved to a solid force in goal.

Newtown 3, Rye 1: Matthew Bucci, David Anderson, and Adam Weber all scored, thanks to great teamwork by Nate Sanchez, Ethan Hoffman and Nick Lansing. The defense was strong with key moves from Sean Wallace and goalie Austin LeBlanc.

Somers 3, Newtown 2 (playoffs): Despite great defensive play by Cyril Brown, Sean Wallace, and Noah LaFerriere, and aggressive goaltending by Austin LeBlanc, Newtown fell in the playoffs — literally. The injured were ushered off the field, while remaining forces, led by Riley Rising and Eliot Gregory, rallied with help by goal-scorers Adam Weber and Shawn McCarthy. Key turnovers proved problematic, and Somers managed the win.
