Driving While Impaired

Police report that at 12:56 am on September 29, they received a telephone call in which the caller stated that that a silver-colored pickup truck, which had made a turn onto Boggs Hill Road from Hattertown Road, had been traveling erratically and had crossed the road’s center line, nearly going off the road.

Police said they went to that area to investigate and located a light-colored pickup truck stopped on the eastbound side of Boggs Hill Road, where the truck had struck three guardposts.

Police said the driver of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, David G. French, 68, of 149 Boggs Hill Road, told them that he had swerved in order to avoid colliding with a deer.

Police said they smelled alcohol on French’s breath, adding that he appeared to be disoriented and confused. Police said French failed three field sobriety tests.

The truck received heavy damage, but French was not injured, police said. The truck was towed from the scene.

Police said they transported French to the police station where he was charged with driving while impaired and with making a restricted turn. After posting $100 bail, French was released for an October 17 appearance in Danbury Superior Court, police said.

VW Vs Chevrolet

Police report a two-vehicle accident near 39 Berkshire Road about 8 am September 27.

Motorist William Jamison, 50, of Branford, who was driving a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck westward in stop-and-go traffic, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Catherine Rodriguez, 19, of Shelton, who was driving a 2003 Volkswagen GTI, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Rodriguez for following to closely.

Jeep Vs Pontiac

Motorist Antonio Duarte, 37, of 5 Grays Plain Road, who had been driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee southward on Queen Street about 5:45 pm September 27, attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, when the Jeep collided with a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am being driven eastward on Mile Hill Road by John Weant, 35, of Southbury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Duarte a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

South Main Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the heavily-traveled intersection of Mile Hill Road and South Main Street about 9:40 am September 28.

Motorist Richard Sergagi, 74, of 15 West Street, who was driving a 1997 Honda Civic, stopped for a red traffic signal on westbound Mile Hill Road, after which he attempted to turn right onto northbound South Main Street, according to police.

At that time, motorist Ricardo Baez, 21, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1995 Mitsubishi box truck northward on South Main Street on a green traffic signal, collided with the turning Honda, police said.

Baez was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Police issued Sergagi a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Suspension

About 10 am September 29, motorist Timothy Wilkes, 39, of Waterbury, who was traveling westward on Sugar Street, ran out of gasoline near Head O’ Meadow Road, police said. On investigating, police charged Wilkes with driving while under suspension. After processing, police released Wilkes on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on October 12.

Berkshire Collision

A two-vehicle collision occurred on eastbound Berkshire Road about 9 am September 28.

Motorist Thomas Quinn, 46, of Sherman, who was driving a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-320 sedan, stopped for traffic conditions, and was then struck from behind by motorist Michael Alp, 52, of Newton, N.J., who was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus, police report.

There were no injuries. Alp was verbally warned for following too closely.

Warrant Rearrest

On the evening of October 1, police arrested Walter Moradel, 37, of Danbury on a warrant, charging him with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving under the influence, and driving while under suspension.

The original motor vehicle charges stem from a February 17, 2005, incident on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center. After posting $500 bail, police released Moradel for an October 17 court appearance.

Supermarket Theft

Police report that at about 2:45 am on September 30, two males entered the Super Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, after which they loaded two baskets full of store items and then left the store without paying for the goods. The store estimates the loss at approximately $150 worth of items, according to police. Police are investigating the shoplifting incident.

Truck Vs Signs

Police said trucker Robert Morrarty, 57, of 53 Parmalee Hill Road was driving a 2001 Kenworth truck tractor on westbound Mile Hill Road about 12:50 pm September 21, when he encountered a disabled commercial vehicle that was blocking the northbound lane of South Main Street at its intersection with Mile Hill Road.

In seeking to avoid hitting that vehicle while attempting to make a turn, the tractor struck some road signs, causing them to fall to the ground, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Commuter Lot

State police report that at about 5:45 pm September 28, they charged Ciro Najera, 23, of Waterbury with four motor vehicle offenses at the Exit 9 commuter lot of Interstate 84, located on Hawleyville Road in Hawleyville.

State police charged Najera with possession of a stolen marker plate, misuse of a marker plate, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a license.

State police released Najera on $500 bail for an October 16 court appearance.

Pole Bridge Road

About 10:35 pm September 27, motorist Ciny Khen, 19, of Bethel was driving a 2002 Toyota station wagon southward near 19 Pole Bridge Road, when the vehicle went out of control, hit an embankment, struck a tree and then came to rest against metal guardrailing, police said.

Khen was not injured, police said. Sandy Hook firefighters went to the accident. Police issued Khen an infraction ticket on charges of failure to keep to the right on a curve and failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

Wasserman Way

Police report that while on patrol on Wasserman Way about 9 am October 2, they spotted a vehicle that traveled over the road’s shoulder line several times, so they stopped its driver to investigate.

Police charged motorist Daniel Quiroz, 28, of 39 Riverside Road with making a restricted turn, driving while under suspension, and driving without automotive insurance.

After processing, police released Quiroz on $500 bail for an October 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Volvo Vs Mazda

Police report a two-vehicle collision on Wasserman Way, near the commuter parking lot for Exit 11 of Interstate 84 at about 5:36 pm September 28.

The collision involved motorist Christopher Potter, 16, of Pheasant Ridge Road, who was driving a 1995 Volvo sedan, and motorist Loren Pace, 47, of Monroe, who was driving a 2005 Mazda station wagon, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Potter an infraction ticket for passing in a no-passing zone.

Shoplifting

Police said they responded to a shoplifting complaint from the Super Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street about 12:15 pm October 3.

After investigating, police said they charged Deirdre Walsh, 38, of 2 Old Town Road with sixth-degree larceny. After processing, police released Walsh on a written promise to appear in court on October 17.

Parking Lot Theft

At about 9:40 am on September 27, a male who was driving a gold-colored Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle entered the parking lot at Newtown High School at 12 Berkshire Road and then proceeded to break into two parked vehicles, police said.

The unidentified male stole some car audio equipment and some Global Positioning System (GPS) automotive navigation gear from the vehicles, after which the male drove away.

The Ford is missing a right rear wheel cover, police said. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the identity of the thief to contact them at 270-8888.

Obtuse Road

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Obtuse Road, near Newbury Road, about 10 am October 2.

Motorist Lisa Lampell, 40, of New York City, was driving a 2000 Cadillac Seville sedan southward, as motorist Barry Burton, 59, of Woodbury was driving a 2001 Ford truck northward there, police said.

The Cadillac crossed the road’s centerline on a curve and collided with the Ford, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Lampell an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to drive to the right.

 

Toddy Hill Crash

Police responded to a two-vehicle accident about 12:12 am October 3 on Toddy Hill Road.

Southbound motorist Hien Nguyen, 50, who was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry, braked on a curve and was struck from behind by southbound motorist Brenda Xayarath, 35, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, police said.

Xayarath initially reported injuries, but later refused medical attention, police said. Xayarath received an infraction ticket for following too closely.
