Optics Left Behind

Police report that they are holding for safekeeping two pairs of eyeglasses that were found in the gazebo at The Pleasance, the park on the northern corner of Main Street and Sugar Street, on the afternoon of July 3.

They are a pair of silver-rimmed reading glasses and a pair of black/red sunglasses. The owner should contact Sergeant Darlene Froehlich or patrol Officer Richard Monckton to claim the items at police headquarters, 3 Main Street, telephone 426-5841.

Honda Off Road

Motorist Jillian Kiernan, 18, of Monroe was driving a 2007 Honda Accord sedan eastward on Botsford Hill Road about 1:30 am June 27, when due to her unfamiliarity with the roadway, she did not realize that there was a sharp curve in the road the left, police report.

The Honda was moving too fast on that curve, went off the road to the right and struck an embankment, police said. Kiernan was not injured. Police verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Vandalism

Sometime overnight on June 29/30, someone threw containers full of fruit juice at Glen Road Auto Body, LLC, at 104 Glen Road, thus damaging a garage door and window at the automotive business.  Police are investigating the vandalism and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

 

Sedan Vs SUV

Motorist Dawn Lewis, 51, of 160 Mt Pleasant Road, who was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy SUV eastward on Mt Pleasant Road about 6:12 pm July 7, slowed and signaled to make a left turn into the driveway at 160 Mt Pleasant Road, after which motorist Melissa Capocci, 32, of Waterbury who was driving a  2003 Toyota Corolla sedan eastward, slowed and attempted to stop, but slid on the wet pavement and struck the rear end of the GMC, according to police.

Ambulance volunteers transported Lewis to Danbury Hospital on a complaint of back/neck pain, police report. Capocci received an infraction for following too closely.

Toyotas Collide

About 9:40 am July 10, motorist Elio Renan Suazo, 20, of Monticello, N.Y., who was driving a 2001 Toyota Corolla northward on South Main Street near the northern driveway for Sand Hill Plaza, slowed for a blinking yellow traffic signal, police report.

Northbound motorist Thomas Mascher, 50, of 75 Marlin Road, who was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry, then struck the Corolla from behind, police said. Suazo, who was evaluated at the scene by ambulance staffers, refused medical attention, police said.

Police said Mascher was following too closely and was driving with a suspended license. Police released him on a written promise to appear in court on July 23.

Credit Card Crime

Police said that on July 10, they arrested Ana Santos, 28, of Waterbury on a warrant listing charges of illegal use of a credit card and sixth-degree larceny.

Police said the arrest stems from past incidents at the Big Y supermarket and the CVS Pharmacy at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Santos was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court for arraignment on the charges.

Multiple Charges

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Matthew Eriquez, 22, of 3 Hawthorne Hill Road went to the police station on the night of July 12 and turned himself in, after which he was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with a past arrest on a charge of providing alcohol to a minor, police report.

Newtown police said that Danbury police also held a warrant for Eriquez on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with past charges of possession of marijuana, driving while under suspension, and failure to have a vehicle registration insert.

Eriquez was held on $5,000 bail for a July 13 court appearance, according to police.

Three Vehicles

A three-vehicle accident occurred on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Toddy Hill Road, about 5:30 pm July 10.

Westbound motorist Irene Dunlap, 45, of 19 Mountain Manor Road, who was driving a 2006 BMW X-3 SUV, stopped for traffic conditions, after which westbound motorist EJ Hetherington, 52, of Brewster, N.Y., who was driving a 2005 Ford Taurus, stopped behind the BMW, police said.

Westbound motorist Russell Westerholm, 53, of Danbury, who was driving a 2003 Ford E-150 truck, then hit the rear end of the Taurus, pushing the Taurus into the rear end of the BMW, police said.

 There were no injuries. Westerholm received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

GPS Theft

Sometime between 11 am and 12:45 pm on July 10, someone stole an automotive-style global positioning system (GPS) navigation device from a vehicle that was parked in a parking lot at 14 Church Hill Road, according to police.

Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Officer Steven Siecienski at 426-5841.

South Main MVA

About 2 pm July 11, motorist Matthew Johnstone, 24, of Mineral, Wash., who was driving a 1997 Saturn SL-1 sedan southward on South Main Street, stopped behind a southbound 2004 Jeep Liberty SUV driven by Diane Salvo, 45, of 10 Hedge Meadow Lane, which was stopped at a red traffic signal at the northern driveway for Sand Hill Plaza, police said.

The traffic signal then turned green and the Saturn drove forward, striking the rear end of the still-stopped Jeep, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Johnstone for following too closely.

Ford Vs Honda

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Cedar Hill Road and Megan’s Circle at about 10:35 am July 8.

The accident involved motorist William Finn, 53, of Glastonbury, who was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer SUV, and motorist Chynna Smith, 18, of 2 Joan Drive, who was driving a 2004 Honda Civic coupe, according to police.

There were no injuries. Finn received a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Highway DUI Arrest

State police report they saw motorist Eleuterio Moreno-Ramirez, 49, of Waterbury swerving while driving  on Interstate 84 at about 1:48 am on July 12, so they stopped him to investigate.

After field sobriety testing, state police charged him with driving under the influence, having an improper vehicle registration, failure to have automotive insurance, failure to drive in the proper lane, and driving without a license.

Moreno-Ramirez posted $1,000 bail for a July 27 court appearance.

Cheshire Man

State police said they stopped motorist Adam J. Poindexter, 25, of Cheshire for driving 85 miles per hour on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 8:14 pm July 9.

State police then arrested Poindexter on charges of speeding, illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, possession of more than four ounces of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of a dangerous weapon (knife).

State police held Poindexter on $10,000 bail for a July 10 court appearance.

Cadillac Hits Pontiac

 About 6:38 pm July 12, motorist Rosa Torres, 36, of Waterbury was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, when the Pontiac had a mechanical failure and it started spinning out of control, state police said.

Eastbound motorist Ashok Nanda, 64, who was driving a 2007 Cadillac CTS behind the Pontiac, then struck the Pontiac, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police took no enforcement.

Asleep At Wheel

While driving a 1998 Volkswagen Passat westward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, at about 5:44 am on July 12, motorist Tony J. Hurtado, Jr, 42, of Guilford fell asleep at the wheel and then drove into guardcabling along the left road shoulder, state police said.

Hurtado was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.

Warrant

Police report that on July 13, they arrested Benjamin Johanson, 21, of Shelton on a warrant on a charge of failure to appear in court, which stems from a November 15, 2007, incident on Wasserman Way in which Johanson was arrested on a motor vehicle charge and several drug charges. Johanson is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 31.

Puzzling Crash

Police report they are investigating a motor vehicle accident in which a 17-year-old girl from Sandy Hook was the driver. Because she is under age 18, she is considered a “youthful offender” and thus her identity is shielded from disclosure under state law, according to police.

Police said they received a call from the girl at about 2:13 am on July 9, to report an accident that had occurred at some earlier time at an unspecified location.

In that accident, a 2009 Subaru Forester SUV, which was being driven by that girl, was damaged, receiving left-rear quarterpanel and bumper damage, according to police. The girl did not disclose where the collision occurred, police said.

Police said they issued the girl a violation for driving a vehicle without a license.

DUI Charge

Police report that after they received a complaint about a vehicle being driven by an apparently intoxicated person, they went to Sunnyview Terrace to investigate at about 8:20 pm July 14.

Police said they gave motorist Ronald Wallenta, 57, of 23 Sunnyview Terrace field sobriety tests, after which they charged him with driving under the influence and with misuse of a marker plate.

Police released Wallenta on $125 bail for a July 28 appearance at Danbury Superior Court.

Mt Nebo Road

A one-vehicle accident occurred on Mt Nebo Road about 1:52 pm July 14.

Police said motorist Jonathan Hull, 58, of 6 Fern Lane was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck near 5 Mt Nebo Road, when he backed up the vehicle and one of the truck’s rolling wheels inadvertently broke a wooden cover for a drainage culvert. Town road workers were called to fix the damage. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Moving Violations

Motorist Picasso Petion, 23, of Bridgeport was driving a vehicle on Main Street which had an obscured marker plate at about 10:37 am July 14, so police stopped him to investigate.

Police charged Petion with driving with an obscured marker plate and with driving with a suspended license. Petion posted $100 bail for a July 28 court appearance.

Arrested

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Andrew Bolmer, 21, of 31 Swamp Road went to the police station on the morning of July 10 and was arrested on a charge of violation of probation.

Police said Bolmer’s arrest on a probation violation stems from his January 10 arrest on a charge of possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.

Following arrest processing, police placed $15,000 bail on Bolmer for his arraignment on the probation violation in Danbury Superior Court on July 10. Bolmer is scheduled to again appear in court on July 23.

Breach of Peace

In response to a report of a verbal confrontation in the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street, police went to the store’s parking lot at about 1 pm July 14 to investigate.

Police said they arrested Donald Wagner, Jr, 53, of Woodbury on a charge of breach of peace. After processing, police released Wagner on $100 bail for a July 29 court appearance.
