RIDGEFIELD â Whether a fan of Oscar Wildeâs snide and snapping wit or simply looking for the finest re-creation of 19th Century British satire to hit the screen in years, audiences have enjoyed the recent feature film release An Ideal Husband, based on the novel by Wilde. The story is delightfully complicated: A cat and mouse game of political and social intrigue paired with a case of mistaken identity.
Jeremy Northam plays Sir Robert, a successful politician suddenly haunted by his past when blackmailed by a conniving and seductive divorcee played by Julianne Moore. With his reputation at stake, scheming ensues in an attempt to preserve his good name.
Rupert Everett graces the screen with a dead-on portrayal of an incorrigible aristocrat, as irresistible as he is irrepressible, while Cate Blanchett is charming as Sir Robertâs high-minded wife. Oscar Wildeâs searing turn-of-phrase seamlessly transcends time in the hands of such a fine ensemble.
Two free screenings of An Ideal Husband will be offered at Ridgefield Library on Tuesday, February 15. Rated PG-13, the film has a running time of 96 minutes. Screenings will be at 1 and 7:30 pm.
