Health Fair Bringing

Big Top Activities

The upcoming Newtown Annual Health and Public Safety Fair is set for September 16 in the Newtown Middle School Gymnasium, according to event chairpersons Mae. S. Schmidle, Dr Della Schmidt, and Health District Director Donna Culbert.

This year’s event, “The Great American Health Fair,” will feature more than 45 exhibitors, at least a dozen different health screenings for concerns including skin cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure, pulse rate, as well as exhibits from Danbury hospital on various new medical advancements, exciting new exhibits from Newtown ambulance, fire, and police departments, plus the Lifestar Helicopter, weather permitting.

The newest and most exciting aspect of the Health Fair this year will be featuring a family-friendly big top tent on the lawn in front of the Newtown Middle School that will feature various health and medical demonstrations during the entire time of the Health Fair.

Dr Robert Grossman, former chief of surgery at Danbury Hospital and now chairman of the Newtown Health District, will be the master of ceremonies of the “Big Top” events.  The activities will include new information and lectures from local medical and health professionals about every half-hour throughout the fair.

The event will also include exhibits, demonstrations and instructions in various health exercises and practices including Tai Chi, Pilate’s, belly dancing, and yoga. These interactive activities will offer those attending an opportunity to either listen and learn, or participate.

“As in years past, we will have the popular children’s poster contest in cooperation with local schools, and participants will have the opportunity to win their choice of a new bicycle and dozens of other prizes,” Ms Schmidle said.

She added that one of the most popular children’s exhibits will be returning to the Great American Health Fair: a temporary pasture on the lawn of the middle school with the Paproski Farm’s award-winning cows in residence for the day.
