Live Auction Highlights This Year’s Scholarship Ball

The Newtown Scholarship Association held its 69th Annual Scholarship Ball on February 4. The elegant event was held at The Waterview in Monroe.

The gathering of more than 125 guests enjoyed a festive evening featuring a champagne raffle, great food, great friends, and great music provided by DJ Dan of Boppers. A new twist was added to the ball this year, a live auction featuring anything from an African Safari, theater tickets to Broadway shows, trips to ball games or an escape to Sanibel Island in Florida, as well as the traditional silent auction tables.

The many auction items, donated by various businesses in town, proved to be popular and generated excitement and enthusiasm in the crowd. Rosie DeStories of Fairfield Auction conducted the live portion of the auction. With the generous support of those attending the ball, the association is able to continue its support of Newtown students in furthering their education.

The Newtown Scholarship Association was established in 1937 as a nonprofit organization to promote and advance the education of secondary school graduates by providing financial assistance to promising students. Originally, a single scholarship of $50 was awarded.

Last year, 33 scholarships totaling $107,000 were awarded to students of the 2005 high school graduating class and 40 scholarships totaling $103,500 were awarded to students for continuing aide. In its 69 years of existence, the Newtown Scholarship Association has help thousands of students with scholarships totaling nearly $3.5 million.
