Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*The Senior Center will be closed on Friday, November 10, for Veterans’ Day.

*FIREPLACE FEAST at the Salem Cross Inn on Wednesday, November 8. Relax by the fire or lend a hand as dinner is prepared for you in old Colonial style. Musical entertainment will be provided. Depart at 9:30 am. Cost is $78 per person.

*Free MAKEOVER CONTEST. Tell us in 500 words or less why you, or someone you know, could use a FREE makeover. Entry deadline is Friday, November 10. Call the Senior Center for more information. The winner will be announced on Thursday, November 16, at 1 pm, at our Feeling Good from the Outside-In Tea. Prizes will be awarded then.

*REMINDERS: *BLOOD PRESSURE checks on second Thursday of each month or the last Wednesday of the month.

*TAI CHI & CHI KUNG will be offered on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Steve Kurimai will instruct the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination and relaxation.

*WALKING FOR FITNESS every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 pm for 30 minutes.

*Let’s get together for the BREAKFAST CLUB every Thursday. Meet at center and take the van to the Blue Colony Diner. Limited to 12 persons at a time. Call to reserve a spot.

*Sign up for COMPUTER CLASSES on Monday and Tuesday, from 3 to 4:30 pm.

The Senior Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 23–24, for Thanksgiving.

*Annual CHRISTMAS PARTY featuring a gourmet buffet, music and entertainment and a 50/50 raffle, will be on Wednesday, December 13, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Waterview on Route 34 on the Newtown/Monroe line. Music. The cost is $35 per person. Call 270-4310 for reservations.

*On November 15 at 1 pm, Jerry and Peggy King will present “Rodgers & Hammerstein Remembered” with songs from Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King & I, The Sound of Music, and other musicals accompanied by Annie Gross on piano. Call to reserve a seat.

*Enjoy “CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII” with  a Polynesian meal, traditional Hawaiian Christmas songs and dances, at the Hu Ke Lau restaurant and dinner theater in Chicopee, Mass. Then drive through Goodwin Park in Hartford for the HOLIDAY LIGHT FANTASIA. a two-mile spectacular, colorful light display. Depart the center at 10 am. Cost is $63 per person

November 6–10

Monday November 6: Tomato Florentine soup, unsalted crackers, grilled cheese sandwich, peas and onions, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday, November 7: Cajun-style pork, Louisiana rice, chopped spinach, whole wheat bread, diet fruit Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Meatball grinder with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese, Italian blend vegetables, cauliflower, parmesan cheese, seasonal fresh fruit.

Thursday: Veterans’ Day Special: All American hamburger with ketchup, tomato and pickle, hamburger roll, creamy coleslaw, baked beans, cherry pie.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: November 13: Virginia ham with pineapple glaze, mashed potatoes, spinach, seedless rye bread, apple juice, lemon cookie;

Tuesday: November 14: Portuguese grilled chicken with onions and tomato, rice and beans, broccoli florets, whole wheat bread, cling peaches.
