Reflections At Hawley

On January 24, the Hawley Parent-Teacher Association announced the winning entries of the Reflections Program, themed “My Favorite Place.” A panel of judges from the Newtown area met recently to choose one entry per age division, per category to be awarded certificates of merit and the opportunity to advance to the state level of competition.

Area judges for the contest were: Jennifer Johnston, owner and artistic director of Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet; Joy Larrabee, a Redding teacher; Sharon Maynard, a banker at Savings Bank of Danbury; Brigette Sorenson, an artist and involved in Newtown’s Commission for the Arts; and Tracy James Terry, president of Zuludog Record Company and Zuludog Music Publishing, singer/songwriter and actress.

The PTA jump-started the program on November 2, with 65 students attending a workshop held in the school gym. The programs offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition.

Students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in six categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production. Seventy-one pieces of art and creative writing works were entered from 50 students between the ages of 5 and 9.

For the second year, Chaeli Allen won for the primary literature entry entitled, “Leaves are Fallen” and Peyton Cutolo won for the primary visual arts entry called “Cape Cod.”

At the intermediate level, Julia Faxon won for literature, Scott Martin for photography, and Hannah Fitzgerald for visual arts. These submissions will be entered into the Connecticut PTA program and judged later this spring.
