Honoring Meals On Wheels

(with cut)

First Selectman Herb Rosenthal recently presented Meals on Wheels president

Rebecca Smith with a proclamation celebrating the organization's 25th

anniversary.

The proclamation proclaims Meals on Wheels Week in Newtown to be February 1-5.

The Meals on Wheels pilot program was instituted in February 1974 by Betty

Parrella and a group of Newtown residents as a non-profit organization with a

board of directors. The program provides a hot noon meal every weekday to

Newtown residents who are unable to provide their own meals.

Meals on Wheels currently serves 36 recipients and are delivered by 125

drivers. Recipients are billed $2 per meal. All additional costs are paid for

through donations, bequests and grants. The organization is not subsidized by

local, state or federal funds.

Meals are prepared at Ashlar of Newtown.

Meals on Wheels will celebrate its 25 years of service to Newtown with a tea

and open house on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm in the Trinity Church undercroft.
