Joy Lindholm Martin, 74, of Newtown, died November 13 at Ashlar of Newtown, after a long battle with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). Mrs Martin was the wife of P. Douglass Martin. She was born in Bridgeport on February 17, 1933, a daughter of Dr William C. and Emily (Dale) Lindholm of Bridgeport and Fairfield. The Martins have been residents of Newtown since 1959.
She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in sociology. Mrs Martin taught biology at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury and worked at the YMCA in Bridgeport. She was a deputy sheriff for Fairfield County for many years and during the 1980s was manager of the Edmond Town Hall in Newtown. Mrs Martin was a member and past moderator of the Newtown Congregational Church where she was an active member of many committees.
She was a member of the Newtown Democratic Town Committee, the League of Women Voters, the Scholarship Association, and the Newtown Tennis Association. She was an athlete who played tennis and softball and loved scuba diving. Mrs Martin was also an amateur photographer.
In addition to her husband of 48 years, Mrs Martin is survived by a daughter, Kate Martin of Danbury; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Marion E. Kinsman, originally of Bridgeport.
A Memorial Service was conducted November 21 in the Newtown Congregational Church.
