Newtown Hikers Unveil Spring Schedule

Newtown Hikers held their final hike of the winter season last weekend, and immediately followed that hike with a potluck lunch and planning session. The 2007 spring schedule will commence this weekend, with an outing at Sweetcake Mountain Preserve in New Fairfield.

Hikes, unless stated otherwise, start at 9 am from the lower rear parking lot of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. Hikers are urged to always check with the listed leader of each hike for weather cancellations and or schedule changes.

Details of the spring schedule are offered below (and calendar listings are offered each week in The Bee’s Enjoy calendar):

April 7, Sweetcake Mountain Preserve, New Fairfield (leader is Molly Schleis, telephone 914-766-4546);

April 14, Sunny Valley Preserve, Bridgewater (Evelyn Schonberg, 426-0425);

April 21, Minnewaska State Park, New Paltz, N.Y., all-day hike, dinner out (Tim Hanbury, 203-888-3025);

April 28, Muscoot Farm, Somers, N.Y. (Jim Steck, 845-621-5559 or 203-263-0086);

May 5, River Road, Roxbury (Pat Callan, 264-2153);

May 12, Mine Hill Preserve, Roxbury (Len Patti, 426-3632);

May 19, White Memorial, Litchfield, new area (Jim Steck, 845-621-5559 or 203-263-0086);

May 26, Ives and Turnill Brook, Southbury (Carol Fullman, 270-1747);

June 2, Squantz Pond, New Fairfield (Betty Horton, 860-354-7526);

June 9, Lake Awosting, Minnewaska, N.Y. (Ildiko Gramling, 263-0086);

June 16, Osbornedale State Park, Derby, short hike led by Tim Hanbury followed by a potluck picnic and planning session, rain or shine (call Rita Qubick for food coordination, 268-4119).

Newtown Hikers is also planning an end of year trip to Vermont, June 22–25. Reservations are required. Call Rita Qubick before June 1 for more details, 203-268-4119.

Newtown Hikers is an open group that welcomes anyone interested in hiking and the outdoors. There is no membership fee. To receive a mailing of hiking schedules all year, send $3 with your name and address to Claire Sivacek, 114 Stadley Rough Road, Danbury CT 06811, or e-mail a request to Ester Nichols at pilgrim555@charter.net.

Hikers participate at their own risk and must sign a release for the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department before participating in any of the hikes. If you want to meet the group at a different point, call the listed leader.

Hikes are moderate and last three to five hours plus driving time unless otherwise

stated. Children are welcome accompanied by adults.

Bring lunch and beverages. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. Dress for the weather.
