An Afternoon Of Fashion At Nunnawauk Meadows

By Nancy K. Crevier

Danbury Dress Barn, in conjunction with Noreen Wilcox, social services director at Nunnawauk Meadows, and Marion Pollack, RN, of Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, presented a fashion show for residents of Nunnawauk Meadows Thursday afternoon, June 14, in the Community Room of the senior housing complex.

Seven models, all residents of Nunnawauk Meadows, escorted by maintenance supervisor Art Monsanto, sashayed down the center aisle of a cheerfully decorated room dressed in fashions provided by the Dress Barn, to the delight of more than 75 guests. The models, assisted by store manager Kim Weggeman and store assistant Katherine Timms, selected their outfits the week before at the Federal Road shop.

“[Dress Barn] tries to be fashionable without being faddish,” explained Ms Weggeman, and the store carries a number of styles in petite and plus sizes that appeal to the older shopper. “There is always a ten percent discount for seniors on Tuesdays at the Danbury outlet,” Ms Weggeman said, and added that all of the guests present at the fashion show would receive coupons good at any of the Dress Barn locations.

Camille Pollaci, a youthful 93 years old, was the first down the runway, followed by Lisa Delorenzo, Frances Beechel, Barbara Wadleigh, Ann Trombetto, Margaret LaRusso, and Victoria Scalora.

“When I was single — and we’re talking about the 1950s — I did some modeling,” confessed Ms Scalora, but for the other models, the Nunnawauk Meadows Annual Fashion Show was their debut into the fashion world.

Alex Hennessey, a senior at Newtown High School, provided background music on the keyboard, as Kay Egan narrated the event.

Residents of Spruce Bank Farm in Woodbury and Grace Meadows in Southbury joined Nunnawauk residents for the fun-filled afternoon that was topped off by punch, coffee, and dessert.

“It’s really a lot of fun for everybody,” said Ms Pollack. “They have a good time.”
