Firing Was Unreasonable
Firing Was Unreasonable
To the Editor:
I am writing this in support of Carolee Mason, who recently lost her job as animal control officer for Newtown.
I have been a volunteer walker at the Newtown Pound for nine years now and have known Carolee ever since she came to work there as the pound keeper, and during the last three years as animal control officer. When she started work at the pound it was a pleasure to see how she interacted with all the animals. They quickly became attached to her, making it possible for her to help them adjust to a stressful situation (impoundment).
I was delighted when Carolee was promoted to animal control officer, knowing that she would work hard to see that these stray animals were well cared for under her watch and that she would help to find good homes for them. She has done just that and more. Not only has she shown caring and concern, but also has demonstrated her ability to handle difficult dogs, get them ready for socialization, and ultimately ready for adoption. Many dogs have become family pets rather than being âput downâ as they might have been in other pounds.
I am at a loss to understand what has prompted this termination of a town employee who has been the best animal control officer this town has had in a long time. If there were administrative issues it seems that training or additional help would have been appropriate.
If there were issues about taking in too many animals, that can be addressed as well. Ruling out any proven criminal charges, I cannot see how this town has a reasonable case for termination, or more importantly why the town would want to fire this gifted woman who loved her job.
Sincerely,
Mary Gaudet-Wilson
