To the Editor:
Today, July 27, we were both put in an odd situation. We were taking a walk down Housatonic Drive to the Shady Rest private beach, having a great time and enjoying the cloudless day. All of a sudden we heard a cracking sound to the immediate right of us. We stopped short and tried to determine what the strange noise was. Within the next five seconds we looked to our right and saw a large tree falling down on top of us and toward a house. We sprinted at top speed, wary of the wide branches. We looked back, once we realized we were safe, and saw the tree toppled on top of the power lines, two cars, and a boat of the house across the street. Within the next few minutes, people came outside to witness what had occurred. We stayed for a few minutes after two families called the police and fire department. So, since everything seemed to be under control we started walking home. Within the next five minutes the volunteer fire department was racing down the street to the scene.
We would just like to say thanks for the immediate support at the scene from the volunteers. You guys do great things! Keep up the good work.
