Highway DUI

State police report they stopped motorist Gerard McAfee, 39, of New Haven at about 1:11 am on November 21 on westbound Interstate 84 to investigate.

State police said that after a brief struggle with troopers, McAfee was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, carrying a pistol or revolver without a permit, interfering with police, and two counts of illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

State police said they found a small loaded handgun and a large hunting knife in the vehicle that McAfee was driving.

State police held McAfee on $100,000 bail for a November 22 court arraignment.

Wallet Missing

On November 15, a person lost a wallet at the Starbucks Coffee Company coffee shop at 34 Church Hill Road. Police ask anyone who has information about the missing wallet to contact officer Bart Lorancaitis at the police station, 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Damaged Vehicle

Police report that sometime between 12:45 and 1 pm on November 12, some unknown driver struck and damaged a gray 2010 Honda Civic that was parked in front of Village Barber Shop at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

The unknown driver left the scene without reporting the collision, which damaged the rear bumper area of the Honda, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the matter to contact them at the police station.

Sandy Hook MVA

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Yogananda Street, near Osborn Hill Road, about 4 pm November 10.

The accident involved motorist Danielli Bina, 47, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2002 Ford sedan, and motorist Andrea Trager, 49, of 49 Charter Ridge Drive, who was driving a 2009 Lincoln SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Bina received an infraction for failure to have a driver’s license, police said.

Sex Registration

Newtown police said that the Westfield, Mass., police department informed them that they held an arrest warrant against Matthew Freeman, 37, of 44 Black Bridge Road on a charge of failure to register in Westfield as a convicted sex offender .

Newtown police said they located Freeman on the morning of November 16, and took him into custody, charging him with failure to register as a sex offender in another jurisdiction.

Freeman was held on $2,500 bail for a November 17 court arraignment.

Freeman was being held on $10,000 bail on November 22 at Bridgeport Correctional Center for a November 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

 

Three Vehicles

A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred about 4:50 pm November 16 near 34 Berkshire Road.

All three vehicles were headed southward on Berkshire Road when the incident happened, police said.

Motorist Charlene Kitchen, 35, of Bethel, who was driving a 2003 Toyota sedan, struck the rear end of a 2008 Volkswagen sedan driven by Michael Sand, 57, of Monroe, police said. That impact pushed the Volkswagen into the rear end of a 2008 Lexus SUV driven by Francis Merante, 20, of Scarsdale, N.Y., police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Kitchen a written warning for following too closely.

BMW Hits Honda

About 8:30 am November 17, motorist Lin Feng, 36, of Orange was driving a 2006 Honda SUV westward near 276 Berkshire Road and then stopped for an eastbound school bus that had activated its flashing lights, police report.

Westbound motorist Lexie Herskowitz, 19, of Orange, who was driving a 2003 BMW SUV, then struck the rear end of the Honda, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Herskowitz and infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Drug Charges

Police report that each of two boys at Newtown Middle School was arrested on the morning of November 18 on a charge of illegal possession of a prescription drug.

Police said that the unspecified drug had not been prescribed to either of the two boys.

Following arrest processing, the boys were released for December 6 appearances at Danbury Juvenile Court. Because the youths are under age 18, their identities are shielded from disclosure by state law.

Multiple Vehicles

Three southbound vehicles were involved in an accident about 11:07 am on November 13, near 103 South Main Street.

Motorist James Moreau, 41, of Ontario, Canada, who was driving a 2010 Chevrolet sedan, stopped for traffic conditions, after which motorist Christina MacNicholl, 47, of 12 Arthur’s Court, who was driving a 2003 Dodge SUV, stopped behind the Chevrolet, police said.

Motorist Alexander Godeski, 17, of Norwalk, who was driving a 1986 Toyota station wagon, then struck the rear end of the Dodge, pushing the Dodge into the rear end of the Chevrolet, police said.

There were no injuries. Godeski received a written warning for following too closely.

Car Hits Flagpole

Motorist Chauncey Johnstone, 71, of Manalapan, Fla., who was driving a 2009 Volvo station wagon, was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Church Hill Road onto southbound Main Street about 1:25 pm on November 17, when he spotted a vehicle approaching him, so he swerved to the left to avoid it, but then collided with the Main Street flagpole, police said.

There were no injuries. Johnstone received a written warning for making a restricted turn, according to police.

Rear-Ender

About 5 pm on November 11, motorist James Solomon, 43, of 14 Saw Mill Ridge Road, who was driving a 2010 Toyota sedan southward on South Main Street, stopped at an intersection with Peck’s Lane and was then struck from behind by motorist Sarah Fenster, 31, of Weston, who was driving a 2006 Honda SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Fenster a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Chevrolet Vs Dodge

Motorist Michael Benedetto, 25, Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Dodge pickup truck northward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Country Club Road, about 11:56 am on November 13, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Cassandra Mulcahy, 28, of Huntington, Mass., who was driving a 2007 Chevrolet sedan, police report.

There were no injuries. Mulcahy received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Queen Street

About 6 pm on November 16, motorist Brenna Calderara, 17, of 10 Silver City Road was driving a 2002 Ford sedan northward on Queen Street, as motorist Melissa Yitts, 21, of 8 Prospect Drive was driving a 2005 Jeep SUV southward there, police said.

The Ford then attempted to turn left to enter a parking lot at 6 Queen Street, but collided with the Jeep, police said.

There were no injuries. Calderara received written warning for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

One-Car Crash

Motorist Jeffrey Palmer, 23, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2006 Pontiac sedan about 2:42 am November 16, did not stop at a stop sign posted on Lyrical Lane and then drove straight onto the road shoulder along Arrowhead Lane where the auto collided with a tree, police report.

Palmer was not injured. Police said they issued Palmer a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Chevrolet Vs Ford

About 9:30 am November 18, motorist Alberto Gonzalez, 50, of 22 Sanford Road, was driving a 1990 Chevrolet van southward on Edmond Road, as motorist Anita Loeber, 58, of Waterbury was driving a 1990 Ford sedan westward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The Chevrolet then attempted to turn left onto eastbound Church Hill Road, but collided with the Ford, police said.

Police said the verbally warned Loeber for an automotive document violation. Police added that the collision remains under investigation.

Sandy Hook Center

Police report a two-car accident in Sandy Hook Center near 101 Church Hill Road about 8:15 pm November 12.

Westbound motorist Steven Gilbertie, 43, of 9 Fox Run Lane, who was driving a 2001 Pontiac sedan on Church Hill Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Victoria Lavalla, 18, of 30-A Chestnut Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Honda sedan, police said.

Lavalla was transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked for injuries, police said. Lavalla received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police.

Larceny Arrest

Police report that they received a complaint on the afternoon of November 17 concerning the theft of a camera, so they investigated.

Following their probe, police charged a youth under age 18 with sixth-degree larceny for allegedly stealing the camera.

Following processing, the youth was released on a written promise to appear on November 29 in Danbury Youthful Offender Court. State law shields the identity of people under age 18 who are charged with crimes.

Dodgingtown Crash

Motorist James Dolan, 50, of Bethel, who was driving a 2007 Hyundai sedan southward near 49 Dodgingtown Road about 7:38 pm on November 19, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Chung Tsui, 46, of 10 Putnam Drive, who was driving a 2003 Honda minivan, police said.

There were no injuries. Tsui received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Multiple Charges

State police report that on the night of November 16, they charged Travis Nelson, 30, of 9 Frontage Road on a warrant listing seven criminal offenses in connection with an unspecified past incident.

State police said they charged Nelson with possession of a prescription medication outside of its original container, possession of a narcotic, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, criminal possession of a weapon, interfering with a search, and destruction of property before, during, or after its seizure.

State police said that Nelson was scheduled to be arraigned in court on the seven charges.

Rear-End Accident

Eastbound motorist Diane Duncan, 52, of 4 Osborne Hill Road was driving a 2008 Ford station wagon near 32 Berkshire Road about 4:37 pm November 22, when she stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Ford was struck from behind by an eastbound 2007 Honda coupe driven by Christopher Balsamo, 22, of Seymour, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Balsamo for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Disturbance

Police report they charged a Maltbie Road man with two offenses on the night of November 20 following a disturbance on that street.

Police said they charged James M. Pearson, Sr, 42, of 25 Maltbie Road with second-degree breach of peace and with reckless use of the highway by a pedestrian.

While he was on foot, Pearson stopped a traveling motorist whom Pearson wanted to slow down, police said. Pearson banged on the motorist’s vehicle and acted tumultuously, police said.

Police released Pearson on a written promise to appear in court on December 7.
