Understanding the environment âdown to the smallest microbe is an incredible tool,â said Land Use Deputy Director Rob Sibley. âWe have never had it before.â
The Conservation Commissionâs largest initiative â the Natural Resource Inventory â needs volunteers for an upcoming July 15 âBio-Blitz.â
Whether a scout or a pro, Mr Sibley welcomes helping hands to gather and document plants, insects, and other evidence of the landâs materials. âWe need people to walk the site,â he said. Midsummer is also an ideal time. Conservation Commission member George Ferguson said, âClearly, we want it when things are in bloom and green,â he said. Are you willing to volunteer? Contact Mr Ferguson at 364-9916, or reach the town conservation office at 270-4350.
The blitz is âa unique tool,â Mr Sibley explained. The inventorying helps scientists, biologists, and planners understand the ecosystem as it exists, and see the habitat, water, geology, Mr Sibley said. The data collected will help with future land use planning; land use often posing a significant disturbance, he said. âThis is a great tool for the town to possess in order to plan for the protection of its natural resources.â
Mr Ferguson said, âThis will help us see what the natural wildlife should look like. It gives us a snapshot.â The blitz is an all-day event beginning early in the morning, and will take place on 20 acres donated through a conservation easement by Arthur DeGraff. The property is on Pond Brook Road off of South Obtuse Road.
