Laugh & Learn: ‘Constitution Now!’

WATERBURY — Naugatuck Valley Community College’s New Zenith Theatre group is launching its first statewide tour this fall with Constitution Now!”, a high-energy play designed for students and adults that takes its audience from the conception of this country’s primary legal document through the modern age.

The group will stage three morning performances at NVCC’s Mainstage theater on October 10, 11 and 12.

New Zenith Theatre will also present the play to the general public on Friday, October 12, at 7:30 pm, in the Mainstage theater, 750 Chase Parkway. Writers Larry Hunt and Steven Washer will be on hand after the performance to participate in a question-and-answer session.

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $6 for students.

The 53-minute play is filled with information and little-known but fascinating events associated with the US Constitution. It explores its use, misuse and other manipulations.

The play, which is particularly well-suited for students grades 7 and up, will both surprise and enlighten its audience with perspectives of American history that focus on the ideals intended by this brilliant and compassionate document.

“My mind is still reeling from all the information packed into this play,” said Miriam Chirico, an English professor at Eastern Connecticut State University who recently saw it. “I did learn a lot, but I also laughed a lot.”

Additionally, New Zenith Theater expects to begin touring the state by the end of the month, performing the play at middle schools, high schools, colleges and other community venues. Bookings are still available. For information, call Ed Wierzbicki, New Zenith’s artistic director, at 203-575-8038.

New Zenith Theatre, now in its ninth season, is committed to plays of integrity for young and family audiences. The dynamic ensemble of theatre arts majors from NVCC’s Department of the Arts have performed works for all ages, with a primary mission to reach young people through the power of exceptional theatre. Past plays have included The Secret Garden, Selkie, Cyrano.
