Danbury Library Director To Host Movie Series

DANBURY — Danbury Library director and film buff Mark Hasskarl will host a monthly film series entitled “European Film Classics: From Silents to the New Wave.” Seven of Mr Hasskarl’s favorite European films from the 1920s to the 1950s have been selected for this series.  Mr Hasskarl will introduce each film and provide written film notes.

The 1924 German film The Last Laugh will be the first film in the series, to be shown on Sunday, October 14, from 2 to 4:30 pm.  This F.W. Murnau silent film classic is considered to be the crowning achievement of the German expressionist movement.

The series will continue with The Passion of Joan of Arc (France, 1928) on November 11; M (Germany, 1931) on January 13; Grand Illusion (France, 1937) on February 10; and will additional films on March 9, April 13 and June 8. Filmgoers should note that all sound films will be subtitled, not dubbed.

Refreshments and optional discussion will follow each film. Admission to the film screenings is free.
