National School Nurse Day Is May 7
National School Nurse Day will be celebrated Wednesday, May 7. This day of recognition has been celebrated annually since 1972 to foster a better understanding of the role of the school nurse in the educational setting.
Governor M. Jodi Rell has issued a statement officially proclaiming May 7 as School Nurse Day in the State of Connecticut. The governorâs proclamation encourages all residents to support, and commemorate, the contributions of all Connecticut school nurses who work diligently to improve the health and welfare of Connecticut students.
The role of the school nurse has certainly evolved over time; however, it is always guided by the specialized practice of nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of students. School nurses often serve as the first-line providers of health care for students, addressing their physical, psychological, and emotional health concerns. School nurses promote health and wellness by providing health education to individuals and groups, through direct treatment for acute and chronic conditions, emergency care for students and staff, collaboration with families and primary care providers, and referrals to community and state agencies.
Everyone is encouraged to reflect upon the contributions of school nurses across the state and to recognize and acknowledge the school nurses in the community on National School Nurse Day.
