Juneteenth Celebration At Mattatuck Museum This Weekend
WATERBURY â Obey Foundation and Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center will celebrate the abolition of slavery in a lively cultural performance. The Juneteenth event will feature African dance and drum group Sounds of Afrika, poet Iyaba Ibo Mandingo, neo-soul recording artist Kevin Haden and other performers.
It will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, at the museum.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It originated in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 and spread across the world. It emphasizes education and achievement and is marked in many places with celebrations, guest speakers and gatherings.
The event is open to all. A $5 donation is suggested and reservations are recommended.
The museum is at 144 West Main Street, with convenient parking on Park Place.
