Parent Education

Program (PEP)

The State of Connecticut requires completion of this program as a prerequisite to granting a divorce.  Sessions of the course sequence are designed to help families cope with the effects of divorce on children. Call 426-8103 for more information.

Strengthening Families Program (SFP)

Will meet every Wednesday for 10 weeks, from 6 to 8 pm, beginning January 16. Registration required.

The Strengthening Families Program is a ten-week program designed to support families as the youth transition into the teen years. There is no cost to participants. Families will participate together in fun activities and games to promote family bonding. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, appreciate parents, resist peer pressure, and get along with others. Parents will be given parenting skills training and other parenting tips. For more information, call Amanda at 270-4335. A light meal and babysitting provided.

Moms’ Programs

Mommy & Me For first time moms and mothers of infants. Meets Tuesday, January 15, from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Gym Time Meets Wednesday, January 2, from 9:30 to 11:30 am at Edmond Town Hall.

Youth Programs

& Activities

NYCAAP Meets Wednesday, January 2, at Newtown High School, from 7 to 8 pm.

Job Bank

Now taking applications from qualified 13-17 year-olds who would like employment babysitting, pet-sitting or misc. household chores. Call for application, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Support Groups

Grandparents Group For Grandparents raising their grandchildren. Meets Wednesday, January 2, from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

Sib Shops For children ages 10 to 14 who have a sibling with special needs. Meets Wednesday, January 2, from 5 to 6:30 pm.

Children of Divorce For children ages 10 to 14  whose parents are divorced or divorcing. Meets Thursday, January 3, from 5 to 6:30 pm.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth & Family Services, 17 Church Hill Road, unless noted. For further information or to register, contact NYFS at 270-4335.
