Yale Psychiatrist Speaking At NAMI Meeting
STAMFORD â On Wednesday, January 9, NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Health chapter of Stamford/Greenwich, plans to present Hilary P. Blumberg, MD, director of the Mood Disorders Research Program at Yale. Dr Blumberg will talk about advances in brain scanning for the detection and treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.
The meeting will take place at 7:30 pm in the Brace Auditorium on the first floor of the Tully Health Center, 32 Strawberry Hill Court. The event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served.
Dr Blumberg is associate professor of psychiatry and diagnostic radiology at the Yale School of Medicine. She is considered an international leader in understanding brain development in bipolar disorder.
In addition to recent research advances, she will discuss new research that shows how treatment may have the potential to prevent the progression of brain changes in people vulnerable to the disorder.
The talk will have special relevance for parents who are confused by the controversy surrounding early diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children, including concern about overdiagnosis and the consequent potential for overmedication, as well as concern about the possible damage from failing to make a sufficiently early diagnosis of the disorder.
