Dignity In Our Government
To the Editor:
Bullying in the Newtown schools has been an issue, and to the best of my knowledge has been resolved. Based on what I have been reading in The Bee, it appears there is a need to address the bullying taking place by the selectmen. In my opinion, the selectmenâs behavior is unprofessional and self-serving. I say one thing to both of you, âGrow up.â
I have searched in the Town of Newtownâs Charter for anything related to Herb Rosenthalâs comment, âThe first selectman acts to implement the decisions of the Board of Selectmen. At this point in time I think you have to sign once the attorney decides theyâre appropriateâ (referring to the lease agreements at FFH). And, Paul Mangiaficoâs statement, âThe first selectman was obligated to carry out the will of the selectmen, etc.â And, Herb Rosenthalâs statement to our First Selectman Joe Borst, âI reluctantly move to authorize Mr Mangiafico to sign if youâre not willing to do so.â
On what basis did Herb Rosenthal have for giving Mr Mangiafico the power to sign leases? Where in the charter is such a procedure authorized?
If Joe Borst, our first selectman, wants to take more time to review the FFH situation and do whatâs in the best interest for the citizens of Newtown, then he should be afforded whatever time he deems necessary. If the lessees are truly committed to leasing at FFH, they will wait. And, are the leases really contingent on the town hall being built at Fairfield Hills?
Letâs bring professionalism and dignity back into our government.
