Two school records were set when the Newtown High School Indoor Track team traveled to Staples High School in Westport for its last South-West Conference developmental meet of the season on Saturday.

Lauren Sudbey, a junior, set the new girls’ pole vault mark at 9-0. Sudbey broke her own previous record of 8-6, which she set earlier this year at Wesleyan University. Also, the boys’ 4 x 240 meter relay team, comprised of seniors Stephen Ashbolt, Cody Cullens, and Jon Toll and junior Josh Milas, clocked a time of 2:07.77. The previous record of 2:09 was set at the SWC Championships in 2002.

Newtown also qualified in ten more slots for the SWC Championship to be held February 2 at the New Haven Track and Field Center at Hillhouse High School in New Haven. Kelley Sullivan qualified in the girls’ 600 meters with a time of 1:51.48. Emma Kingsley and Lauren Pettinelli qualified in the girls’ 55 meter dash, both coming in at 8.1. Sara Phenix also qualified in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 26-10.

On the boys’ side, Jon Toll qualified in the 55 meter dash with a 7.2 as did Evan Barreto with a 7.1. In the 55 meter hurdles, Cody Cullens entered a qualifying time of 9.12 and Josh Milas enters with a 9.3. Milas also qualified in the pole vault with a mark of 9-6. Kevin Bonacci qualified in the long jump after a leap of 17-1.

Several athletes improved their qualifying marks this weekend, including Stephen Ashbolt who dropped his 55 meter dash time down to 6.9, which qualifies him to compete at the state championships as well.

This Saturday, 30 members of the team are slated to compete in the Southern Connecticut Conference Coaches’ Invitational at Hillhouse High School.

This will be their last SWC qualifying opportunity as they compete against teams from across Connecticut and parts of New York.
