SOUTH DEERFIELD, MASS. — At its December 7 auction, Douglas Auctioneers will feature a collection of Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture and family portraits, both French and American, from the 200-plus-acre Ashfield, Mass., estate of Anne Moen Bullitt. At auction the same evening Douglas will offer diverse collection of books derived from the several marriages of Bullitt’s mother and father, including monographs on thoroughbred horses.

Bullitt was the only child of the late Louise Bryant and William Christian Bullitt, who served as ambassador to the Soviet Union and France under resident Franklin D. Roosevelt. Anne Bullitt died at the age of 83 in Dublin, Ireland.

William C. Bullitt developed a friendship with Sigmund Freud, and they collaborated on a book, Thomas Woodrow Wilson: A Psychological Study published after Freud’s death. Later, Bullitt was welcomed back by foreign colleagues when Roosevelt in 1933 made him “Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of the United States of America” to the Union of Society Socialist Republics. The appointment document for this post, which carries the signature “Franklin D. Roosevelt,” will be offered in the sale. The auction also includes Freud’s and Bullitt’s book on Wilson as well as Bullitt’s book The Greater Globe Itself.

Other offerings from the family library of the late Anne M. Bullitt include Little Review and other magazines of an ephemeral nature, as well as Memoirs of Zehir-Ed-Din Muhammed Baber (London, 1826) Hardy, The Dynasts (1904–08); Life of Abdur Rahman, Amin of Afghanistan, 1900, and numerous equestrian stud books and individual monographs on thoroughbred horses.

A standout is a rare Colton’s Atlas of America — Philadelphia Commercial Edition, 1856, with all maps called for except Texas and with 42 full-size lithographic plates, many of them brilliantly colored.

Furniture offerings include several Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century tavern tables, early chairs, hutches, an early decorated cabinet on stand, a French parlor set, butterfly and tip and turn tables, Queen Anne stands, Federal stands and card tables, Sheraton and Empire canopy beds, an early joint stool and Sheraton drop leaf tables.

Fine art includes several large ancestral portraits; a J.J. LaValley still life of fruit; J.T. Peele “The Children’s Breakfast”; a number of miniatures on ivory; several watercolors; art by F. Leger, L. Baskin, A. Ollivary, M.L. Leszczynski, S. Dali; Oriental prints; and Continental and other paintings.

From the estate of W.C. Bullitt comes Images Extraites des archives de la Maison Pellerin D Epinal (a portfolio of Napoleon’s campaign), presentation fragments of stone sculpture from father Marquette’s rooms presented to William C. Bullitt, desk sets, portraits and more.

Glass and china will be led by a Sevres charger with outdoor banquet scene, 1781, a partial set of Heron china, French faience plates, cut crystal, Oriental jars, decanters and lamps.

Accessories include a running horse weathervane by J. Harris & Son, Boston, a pair of bronze and marble figurines of nude females from the Curtis-Valsuani Foundry, two humped back jointed bears, several quilts, a pair of iron whippets, a Franklin stove, light and fireplace equipment, several hooked rugs, several pieces of pewter, both American and Continental.
