TRADEWINDS ALL-CANE AUCTION SEPTEMBER 2008 PRE w/3 cuts from catalog

SALEM, MASS. — Tradewinds will present its 33rd all-cane live auction at the Salem Waterfront Hotel on September 13. In its 16th year of doing all-cane auctions, the firm will offer 206 lots with many rare and uncommon examples.

Among the items to be presented will be a continuation of pieces from the late Philip Hampton’s collection, examples from the Stephen Rice collection of Lake Forest, Ill., as well as items from the collection of Dr Michael Roth of Pacific Palisades, Calf., and some pieces from a nautical Cape Cod collection.

The sale will be preceded by a special event and private auction preview at the Salem Waterfront Hotel at 6:30 pm on September 12. It will be Tradewinds’ ninth preauction event and will feature Midori Oka, associate curator of Japanese art at the Salem’s Peabody/Essex Museum, who will present a lecture on “Myths and Legends in Japanese Art.”

A sampling of auction highlights includes a silver with gold quartz cane ($10/15,000), an unusual 1697 English pique ($6/8,000), a scarce and important violin cane ($9/13,000) and a rare Tiffany watch ($7/9,000). A scarce Remington small doghead curio ($8/10,000), a Tiffany silver Nast eagle ($6/8,000), a fine ivory peacock ($3/4,000) and a porcelain man with long hat ($2/3 ,000) are also among the highlights.

Other notable examples will include a ivory ram ($3/4,000), a whale ivory knot on carved whalebone ($7/9,000), an ivory spotted snake on whalebone ($5/7,000), an ivory sea monster on whalebone ($4/6,000), a scarce narwhal with wood cap ($3/5,000), an Antietam reconciliation cane ($2/3,000), and an important Benjamin Perry 1774 cane ($2/3,000).
