Camp Rising Sun Readies For Silver Anniversary

MERIDEN — A Newtown resident joined more than 70 other Connecticut children who have faced a similar diagnosis during the American Cancer Society’s Camp Rising Sun “Reunion Weekend” March 28–29 in Colebrook.

The free overnight weekend allowed perspective and first-time campers the opportunity to explore the camp while building new friendships with fellow campers who have had a similar cancer experience. Returning campers were happy to reunite with lifelong friends and eagerly welcomed new campers to their family.

All campers participated in arts and crafts, recreational sports, karaoke, board games, and winter outdoor activities.

“Reunion Weekend serves as a reminder to all campers, new and returning, that they are not alone in their cancer struggle; the friendships they make here will last a lifetime,” said Tina Saunders, American Cancer Society’s camp coordinator.

This summer marks the Silver Anniversary of Camp Rising Sun, a camp where children ages 6–17 who are in treatment or remission for cancer can experience a safe overnight summer camp experience. This year, camp will be held during the week of August 17–22 with summer activities of swimming, photography, magic tricks, board games, hiking, horseback riding, and boating.

Caregivers of a child who has, or is currently receiving treatment for cancer, may understandably have concerns about medical care; at Camp Rising Sun, there is always a pediatric oncologist and at least four nurses available on site, 24 hours a day, throughout the duration of camp.

Camp Rising Sun is staffed by volunteers who come to camp from all types of backgrounds, including teachers, firefighters, police officers, and students. All share the mission of giving the campers a safe and fun-filled week.

Camper to staff ratio is 2:1.
