Girls U16
The Newtown Hurricanes finished off their spring season by earning a first-place trophy at the annual Newington Wrap-Up Tournament. Against four of the top teams in the state â including Cup champ Newington and Cup runner-up Wallingford â the Hurricanes allowed no goals in four games to claim the trophy. Team members included Adelle Ceretta, Gina Bonacci, Heather Johnson, Emily Kluga, Caleigh Boyle, Megan McGowan, Haley Keane, Danielle Norris, Meghan Barbour, Kelly Sullivan, Cara Colacurcio, Erin Nemeth, Sarah Shannon, Sarah Feinstein and Kate Bowen.
Cheshire Tournament â
Hurricanes 3, Danbury 2 â Kelley Sullivan scored a goal and assisted on another while Haley Keane and Kate Bowen each tallied a goal to lift the Hurricanes past Danbury. Cara Colacurcio and Danielle Norris chipped in with assists.
Shelton 1, Hurricanes 0 â Caleigh Boyle, Sarah Shannon, Sarah Feinstein, Erin Nemeth and Megan McGowan controlled play for most of the game, but a great volley off a corner kick by Shelton gave the Hurricanes their only loss of the tournament.
Hurricanes 0, Naugatuck 0 â Meghan Barbour, Adelle Ceretta and Natalie Villa sparkled on defense as the âCanes captured a nil-nil draw with Naugatuck. Gina Bonacci led the offense, which dominated the play but could not find the back of the net. Emily Kluga and Heather Johnson combined for the shutout in goal.
U14 Samba
Newtown 1, Oakwood 1 â Jeff DiNicola scored off a cross from Guy Santos to lift Newtown U14 Samba to a 1-0 win over Oakwood in the State Cup championship. The win earns Samba a berth in the Regional championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which began Thursday (June 29). The side is coached by Brookfield High School varsity coach Tony Fernandez while the Samba program is under the direction of Brian Neumeyer and Nick Booth.
Boys U14
Raptors 4, New Milford 0 â Adam Buccino, George Zaruba, Ralph Sergiovanni and Dan Greenwood all scored as the Raptors claimed the U14 Northwest District title. Ben Miles, Casey Tenney and Andy Lapple controlled the defensive half as the Raptors finished 8-0 in league play.
Raptors 1, Guilford 0 (OT) â Matt Baier converted a penalty kick in overtime and goaltender Zach Dlouhy made a spectacular save to lead the Raptors past Guilford in double overtime in the finals of the Cheshire Invitational Tournament. The Raptors outscored their opponents 16-4 during the four-game tournament, let by a balanced scoring attack from Buccino, Zaruba, Sergiovanni, Dan Clement, Eric Keogler, Matt Iassogna, Ben Miles and Xhulio Halili. The defense was led by Ben Mahony while Chris McCann and Kyle Kromberg controlled the midfield. This season marked the fifth and final year together for the side and over the past five years, the team captured two league titles, five tournament titles and went deep into the state tournament a number of times. The team was coached by Bill McCann, Bob Salvador and Ray Greenwoood.

Girls U12
Power 6, Watertown 2 â Ali Korchman recorded a hat trick while Hannah Maret, Molly Mahony and Ale Fuentes added solo goals as the Power concluded an undefeated league season. Mahony, Kelley Gaston, Meaghan Carney, Maddy Keane and Cristina Caporale had assists as Nora Murphy and Nicole Davis played well at forward. Cristina Naldini and Brooke Leifels were solid in the midfield and Leah Barrett, Abby Keough, Catherine Scott and Celeste Cheung anchored the defense. Stefanie Clavette played exceptionally well at goal. The Power finished 6-0-2 in the league and 16-2-3 for the overall spring season, winning the Glastonbury and North Kingston Tournaments. They placed second in the Newtown Memorial Weekend tournament.
Tryouts
Western United Extreme U14 premier soccer will hold tryouts for the 2006/2007 season starting Wednesday, July 5, in Trumbull. Tryouts will be held July 5 from 5 to 7 pm at Twin Brooks in Trumbull, July 6 from 6 to 8 pm at Indian Ledge Field in Trumbull and July 11 from 6 to 8 pm at Indian Ledge.

Boys U8
Vikings 3, Wizards 0 â Matt Maturo scored two goals and James Carney added one as the Vikings defeated the Wizards in the final game of the season. Matt Stewart, Matthew Kretz and Curtis Giles all played strong games for the Vikings. For the Wizards, Ryan Norton was outstanding in goal as Jack Reilly and Sean Dalton had strong games for the Wizards.
Bulldogs 5, Supershooters 0 â Clay Gattey scored four times to lead the Bulldogs to the win. Sam Duffy also scored while Justin Oelberg, Michael Cook and Ryan King notched assists. Michael Berko and Gabriel Barrett controlled the defense.
