Newtown High School's softball team stretched its winning streak to seven games and picked up its 13th win in its last 14 contests, culminating with a 16-4 mercy-rule, five-inning victory at Stratford High on May 14.

The Nighthawks carried an overall record of 15-4 and South-West Conference mark of 11-1 into the regular-season finale against unbeaten Masuk of Monroe. That game was rescheduled two days in a row, due the storm on Tuesday. The winner of the Newtown-Masuk game is the SWC's top seed and the loser the No. 2 team in the conference tournament, which is set to get started on Saturday, May 19. Regardless of its placement, Newtown, as one of the top four teams, will host a quarterfinal-round game.

This past week, the Hawks also run-ruled host Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport 17-0 on May 9, and blanked visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 2-0, at Treadwell Park on May 11.

Against Kolbe, Shannon Cheh was 2-for-3, five RBI, three runs scored; Angela Carriero went 2-for-4, including a homer, three RBI, two runs scored; and Katie Goyda was 3-for-4, including a double, three RBI, and a three runs scored. Sara Kennedy delivered a single, RBI, and two runs scored; Rachel O'Grady added a two-run hit; and Jackie Moccio had a hit, RBI, and run scored.

Kennedy pitched two innings and compiled five strikeouts. Shauna Tucker pitched the last three innings with three strikeouts.

Against Pomperaug, Kennedy allowed two hits, struck out ten batters and did not allow a walk. Newtown had beaten Pomperaug 13-3 earlier this spring but needed Kennedy's effort and what hitting it could get in the rematch.

Cheh was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored; Kendra Saunders had an RBI ground out in the fourth; and Kennedy singled and scored. O'Grady made a nice running catch in left center field in the final inning.

Against Stratford, Newtown collected 19 hits. Tess Mubarek was 3-for-4 with three runs scored; Kennedy was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and four runs scored; Fisher was 3-for-3, including a double, drove in three runs, and scored twice;and Moccio was 3-for-3 including two doubles, four RBI, and two runs scored. O'Grady was 2-for-3 with two RBI; and Saunders added a hit and RBI. Tucker was in the pitcher's circle and allowed seven hits, struck out four, and walked two.

Masuk is one of three unbeaten teams in the state and went into the matchup ranked first in Class L. Newtown went into the regular-season finale ranked sixth in Class LL.
