The week of May 15 is National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. Each year the American College of Emergency Physicians marks a week in May to honor the lifesaving services of those who serve on the “front line” of medicine.

EMS providers include a wide range of individuals, including those who work in — and yes, drive — ambulances. But please, do not call them “ambulance drivers.” EMS workers include certified emergency medical responders, emergency medical technicians, and licensed paramedics. Whether they receive a paycheck or are volunteers, they are all professionals who receive the same training to save a life.

It is these EMS professionals who bring their training, skills, and experience into our homes and on our streets. They literally bring aspects of the emergency department into our community, and can start critical medical treatment while rapidly and safely transporting patients to the hospital. EMT skills include CPR, operation of cardiac defibrillators, administration of oxygen, and assisting with childbirth. Advanced EMTs can start IVs. Paramedics provide the highest level of prehospital care, such as inserting breathing tubes, interpretation of EKGs, and administration of a wide range of emergency medications. All treatment guidelines are under the direction of emergency physicians, through both standard protocols and direct radio communication.

EMS is a field that requires commitment and dedication. In addition to their initial training, EMS providers receive ongoing education. Their choice to be an EMS provider is a decision to maintain their abilities though ongoing training, testing, and evaluation of their skills.

St Vincent’s Medical Center is proud to be a part of our EMS system. We are grateful that we have individuals who will answer the call for help in our community, start lifesaving care, and transport them quickly and safely to a hospital emergency department. During National EMS Week, we take this opportunity to say “thank you” to our EMS Everyday Heroes.
