Explore The First Thanksgiving During A Flanders Workshop

WOODBURY — Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust is offering three sessions of a lecture/activities workshop for the whole family entitled “The Background Story of the Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving Shared With The Friendly Indians.” All ages will find the highly educational program of interest.

The program will start with the Pilgrims’ untimely arrival and then focus on their ensuing interrelationship with the local Wampanoag Indians. The Thanksgiving feast lasted for three days and included games, stories and dancing between the new friends.

Some of the Native American cultural activities will include an introduction to game competitions between the “White Men” and the “Red Men,” along with dances such as the Round Dance, the Deer Hunting Dance, and the Duck Dance, and the significance of the Native American daily way of life.

The workshops will be presented on Saturday, Nov 17, at 1:30; Sunday, Nov 18, at 1:30; and Thanksgiving morning at 9:30, at the Studio Welcome Center at the Van Vleck Farm Sanctuary. Call the Nature Center at 203-263-3711 for more info, a list of materials to bring, and to register. A $5 family donation would be appreciated.
