Remembering Greg Chion
Remembering Greg Chion
A plaque in the memory of former Newtown High School swim team member Greg Chion was formally dedicated last Friday night prior to the Newtown-Brookfield meet. Brookfield coach Brian Reiff, who coached Newtown back in 2000 when Greg passed away from leukemia, gave a short dedication speech on the deck with former assistant coach Carl Strait and Gregâs parents, John and Ginny Chion. The plaque was a senior project of Kara Kunst and Candace Cohen, who organized a fundraising swim meet at the time with the help of Matt Fries, Kane Kunst, Lauren Bass and Karen Sovern. Last Friday, $667 was raised for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A similar plaque in the memory of Jonathan Ullo, a former member of the Newtown cross country team, will be dedicated soon.
