Vipers Second In Cape Cod Competition

The Newtown Vipers U11 boys’ soccer team spent a beautiful fall weekend in Cape Cod at the Harvest Cup Soccer Tournament this week. The team won its bracket and advanced to the championship game. In the first round of play, the Vipers won two of three games and played to a hard-fought tie. The Vipers went up against the Massachusetts Vipers and fell behind 2-0 within the first ten minutes of the game. Owen Sullivan started the comeback with a quick goal early in the second half. Dylan Sock knotted up the score shortly thereafter. Late in the game, the Vipers found themselves trailing again until Henry Vaughan blasted home a shot to tie the game. This game was just a preview of the dramatic championship game to come.

On Sunday afternoon, the Newtown Vipers battled through overtime before losing to the Massachusetts Vipers in penalty kicks. After a scoreless first half, the Newtown Vipers took the lead on Henry Vaughan’s goal early in the second. The Massachusetts Vipers scored later in the half to force overtime. The score remained unchanged through the ten-minute sudden death period so the teams moved to penalty kicks to determine the champion. The Massachusetts Vipers won the penalty kick round 4-2 to win the championship.
