Newtown Middle Schoolers Win First Two

Newtown Middle School’s boys’ basketball team defeated Rochambeau 49-47 in its season opener on December 18 and toppled Schagticoke 54-15 on Monday.

In the first win, Eric Fiore who netted 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the way.

Sean Elliot had 9 assists to go along with his 6 points. Gavin Scallon led the fast break offense all night and scored 8 points, while Reid Schmidt, Patrick Riccardi and Michael Scharfenberg played aggressive defense. Michael Daubert, Chris Devaney, Justin DeVellis and Stephen Conway made big contributions off the bench.

Against Schagticoke, everyone on the Newtown team scored. Scallon led all scorers with 8 points and Elliot and Daubert had 7 apiece. DeVellis and Conway controlled the tempo of the game while dishing out several assists each.

Scharfenberg and Devaney each scored 6 points as they dominated the boards.

Wyatt Depuy put in 5 points to go along with his solid defense.
