Green Team Gets T-Shirts

By Eliza Hallabeck

Students on the Middle Gate School Green Team wore T-shirts to show their membership in the group for the first time Thursday, December 18. The Green Team is a group of 15 students in the fourth grade that meets every Thursday morning to collect recyclable items from the school’s recycling bins.

Every Thursday the group holds a meeting, and follow that up by breaking up into teams to collect the recycling bins. In groups of roughly three, the students go to each room in the school and empty out the bins.

If the students find items that do not belong in the recycling containers, such as plastic food bags, they inform the classroom in which they are collecting. Green Team members one-by-one empty each room’s recycling bin into their larger bins to be brought back to recycle.

Last Thursday’s meeting of the group also had its members discuss a Socks and Mittens Drive they are currently working on. The Green Team wants to collect socks, mittens, and hats to give to a Mobile Soup Kitchen in Bridgeport. Last year more than 500 pairs of socks were collected, according to Dawn Barrett, the teacher who runs the Green Team.

Ms Barrett said the T-shirts the students on the team were given help to make them stand out as members of the Green Team while they collect the recycling from around the school. The shirts were designed by Miracle Graphics & Marketing, LLC.
