Chartwells Celebrates Healthy Nutrition Month

In Newtown Schools

By Eliza Hallabeck

Chartwells, the food service provider to the Newtown Public School district, celebrated Healthy Nutrition Month in multiple schools in March.

The theme for the month was “Mediterranean Dinners,” and the food prepared, information and games brought to Newtown High School, Newtown Middle School and Reed Intermediate School centered around that concept.

“We’re trying to reinforce good nutrition values,” Jill Patterson, resident dietician for Newtown for Chartwells, said on March 17 at NHS, the first school to be visited for the event.

A chick pea salad and a pear and raison salad were prepared in small cups for students to choose when they visited the station set up in each of the schools’ cafeterias.

A game, similar to Jeopardy, was prepared for the students to try their luck. By answering one of the questions on the board, the students were given food to try and a raffle ticket. At the end of the school day, a student was chosen by raffle to receive cafeteria credit at their school.

Ms Patterson said the lifestyle and food that make up the Mediterranean diet made it a healthy choice for this past month’s theme.
