Giving Cats Shelter

Cats that live in Connecticut require adequate winter shelter. While cats’ coats build and thicken before cold temperatures set in, a good winter shelter will keep them warm, dry, safe and out of the harsh elements.

Thanks to 14-year-old Gordon Crean, The Animal Center has 20 new winter shelters available to Newtown residents who are caring for feral cats. Gordon is an Eagle Scout, and for his final leadership project he wanted to help homeless cats. Gordon and his family had adopted a kitten they named Kipper from The Animal Center several years ago. Kipper had been a homeless kitten born to a stray mom cat in Sandy Hook, and Gordon wanted to give something back to the program that rescued his cat.

The Animal Center needed winter shelters for feral cats. Using shelter plans provided by a national feral cat advocacy group, Gordon led a team of Scouts in the construction of 20 winter shelters that took five weeks to complete.

To request a winter shelter for a feral cat you’re caring for, email The Animal Center at info@theanimalcenter.org or call 270-0228. Supplies are limited.

The Animal Center requests a $25 donation to cover its cost for the materials used for the shelters, except in cases of financial hardship.  The goal is to get these shelters to the people and cats who need them most.
